Descent Network Sessions: The Beginning

Descent Session Part I: May 11th, 1996

Our first real Session. Christian, Sandra and I (Heiko) DID already two overnight sessions, but only we three played on these meetings and second, we played all kind of games (from Descent I over II but also C&C and Warcraft 2...). But on these meetings we realised two things: First, games like C&C and Warcraft II get boring very soon, and we had only real fun with Descent. And second, we dreamed of bigger sessions with 8 players. And so these two days (May 11th and 18th) were born, our first two real Descent Sessions. On this first session on the 11th we were only 5, but the day was okay. We mainly played a team-game with the CRAZY X-Levels and the Panic, Pandemonium and DogFight levels.

Descent Session Part II: May 18th, 1996

Altough we were 8 players for the first time, this day was not so good due the people came were a mix of real Descent-fans and some not-really-Descent-players. A discussion was started, which game was better, Quake or Descent II, because one of the guys wanted to play Quake. After the discussion was everyone in low spirits. So after this day we decided to announce the next session as real Descent II-only sessions, and everyone who does not agree, shall stay at home. Also we decided that no discussions will be made anymore on the sessions. Everyone has its opinion and our Descent-Sessions are not the right place to discuss those things... Fabian stayed only a few hours because of illness... We mainly played Descent I-Levels which I gave Anarchy-capability with more and new D2-weapons. Also this was the first day we had the full 10 Panic-Levels and the V1.1-version of Descent II.

Descent Session Part III: October 19th, 1996

This was the first session not in my apartment, where it was always nearly too narrow for 8 persons. Thorsten <THOSY> has organised a room (or better say: two rooms), where we all have enough space to sit and play comfortably. One room was with the blue team and the other with the red team, so you could play real teamwork with talking without the enemies to hear what you plan... It started with 2 and a half hour hard work to make every computer Descent-ready (we had many sound and netcard problems!) but then it was quite a good and funny session... Unfortunatly, the session was mostly not played by all 8 player the whole time, because 3 persons was diverted with creating CDs. We mostly played the original Descent II Levels, which Heiko had altered to be multiplayer-suitable, but the levels crashed often because Devil made some shit (some walls were mistakenly tagged as normal exit switches, which resulted in unforeseen effects...)

Descent Session Part IV Day 1: December 28th, 1996

This session was our forth big session, our second session in the big rooms in Weilimdorf, our first two-days-session, our first session with V1.2-bugfixed-Multiplayerrankings-version and last but definitly not least, our best! At the beginning Heiko was promoted to Admiral and Murdock's joystick was broken. "I keep to forgetting that..." During the day we played PPG_Hall, EON X, Bolbula America, PTMC Park, our own DeltaSet and other great levels in flag and anarchy modes. Originally it was planned to play a lot Team Hoard but our copies from Interplay did not reach us in time... In the evening, after the last 4 mentioned players have left, we played a 5-player-EON X-game with the most fun you can ever think of. This was mainly because these 5 players are all really Descent fans and play all good. The first time we ever had a real TEAM game!!! And Christian <MURDOCK> was so with the game, that his hat switch from his Logitech Wingman Extreme broke up!! What was also really improved comparing with the last session, that it was much more organized than the previous one: We managed to test and equip the computers one day before that we don't loose our head anymore due to more than 2 hours hard work till everything works: The session was ready to play in less than one hour without any sayable problems!! Descent Manager V1.0 Beta 02b was used to organize this session!

Descent Session Part IV Day 2: December 29th, 1996

After the first day went so good the second began also great: Endless fun in playing all sort of games. Classic CRAZY X, a STADIUM (1-3) anarchy game, another great EON X game, a short VORTEX game and at the end we played Level 10 of the Panic Series. Although it took a while until Christian was good enough to play good again (he had to slide now with the keyboard after his head switch broke up the last day), this second day was worth to be called the continue of the first day. What a good end of year... And Heiko <HH-SOFT> was finally promoted to DemiGod with 3000 kills, 1488 deaths and a efficiency of 67%. After the session everybody said: "I will never play Descent II this year any more! But next year..."

Even after this great end of year nobody could imagine, what follows only few weeks later: Over the internet we found two cool guys, which are Descent freaks as we are; the result was a great session in Kaiserslautern in mid of January: the first overregional session!
