Freespace expansion pack Thu, 30 Jul 1998 - 2:16pm.

Silent ThreatAn expansion pack for Descent: Freespace has been announced!  Entitled "Silent Threat", it should be released sometime Octoberish.  Details follow:

As the Great War rages on, you've been commissioned by the GTI (Galactic Terra Intelligence) for special intelligence operations.  In a matter of National Security, you've been asked to go behind enemy lines in order to preserve the fragile space treaty.  Is the GTI setting you up or are the Shivans spreading their evil rage?

The mission pack will include a total of 60 new missions, two new player ships, a new enemy capital ship, two new primary weapons and two new secondary weapons.   Interplay are holding a mission design contest in which the winners will have their missions included on the mission disk, details can be found here.  Also check out Interplay's Silent Threat page.  Thanks to Strobe for the news tip.

Valhalla Tower's 2nd birthday! Fri, 24 Jul 1998 - 3:25pm.

Yep, that's right, Valhalla Tower celebrated it's second birthday this week!   From its humble beginnings as Rtwice's Aussie Descent site in early 1996, the site was redesigned and renamed in July 1996, and could be found at http://d2.mpx.com.au.  Another major site redesign occurred in October 1997.  Our provider pulled the plug on us in December 1997, and the Descent Network was kind enough to offer us space on descent2.com, our current home.  We'd like to thank you for your continued support of Valhalla Tower, and remember -  we love feedback.  Send all comments, good or bad, to us at this address.

Observer mode in D3 Fri, 24 Jul 1998 - 3:01pm.

Two different observer modes for Descent 3 have been confirmed!  An observer mode is where you join a multiplayer game, but don't actually participate yourself - you merely watch the action.  Here are the details:

Right now there are two basic modes - Roaming and Piggyback.  Roaming mode allows you to move freely about the level without being seen or heard.  Piggyback allows you to view the action through the eyes of another player.  Piggyback mode also has the capability to view the action from any object, so you could see what an AI controlled entity was doing, for example.

Kudos to Descent3.net for the tip.

D3 networking update Tue, 21 Jul 1998 - 11:34pm.

Kevin Bentley, networking programmer on the Descent 3 team, has revealed a new networking model for the game - a hybrid of client/server and peer-to-peer.  In this model, movement and firing info is still sent between the clients, but the server will be the authority for kills and other game info.  This model will presumably reduce lag for games containing a small number of players.  For more info, check out Kevin's developer notes page.
